Postcard text: In 1926 James Herman Banning became the First African American to be issued a pilot's License by the U.S. government. On October 9, 1932, Banning, from El Reno, Oklahoma, and Thomas Allen from Oklahoma City, also became the first African American pilots to cross the United States by Airplane. The Flight from Los Angeles, California, to Long Island, New York, took 21 days to complete. Without major sponsorship, they relied on fund raisers along the way purchase fuel and make repairs. The total flying time was 41 hours and 27 minutes.
